High Cost High Profile Seminars/Workshops on Poverty Eradication Vs Poverty Action on the Ground:
“For poverty eradication, there is no need to waste resources by arranging seminars/workshops at 5-Star hotels or travel long distances to attend high profile conferences at huge costs.
What is necessary is political and institutional commitment and action at the household level. But it is crucially important first to understand the true circumstances of the households and then stand by them with a package of services including education, training, health services, social capital formation and other specific services needed by the particular households. Trained and motivated change agents deployed by dedicated institutions are needed to implement such a package.
The cost incurred in one seminar with about 100 participants at a 5-Star hotel in Dhaka can support at least five extremely poor households to move up above the poverty line.
It is known what to do and how to do it to remove poverty in Bangladesh. Further learnings should emerge as action progresses. Sensible thing to do is to avoid fancy and expensive talk shops and promote action.
Anyone interested to see the efficacy of this approach on the ground may visit one of the 200 unions under the ENRICH programme of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF).”
